Advice for Getting Cheap Airfares

  • Use an online travel site, like Microsoft's Expedia
  • Make your own decision about using a bunch of different sites. The advantages to some other sites, like Travelocity or Orbitz is that they may list fares from a few additional airlines. The fares for airlines that are listed across each of the sites will be more or less the same, but not exactly the same, as airlines cut deals with the travel sites and some get lower prices as a result. Use the site that is easiest for you.
  • Be sure to check out low-cost carriers directly at their sites: JetBlue, AirTran, Southwest, SpiritAir, etc. They may not be listed on the major travel sites.
  • In general, try to get your reservation 2-3 months in advance. Start checking as soon as you can.
  • Get e-tickets; they're cheaper than paper tickets and have various other benefits.
  • Try modifying your flight schedule to fly on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday.
  • Be sure to include a Saturday night stay between your flights.
  • Keep your return flight under thirty days from your departing flight.
  • Read the fare rules. Or if your travel dates are flexible, try Expedia's Fare Calendar.
  • Always sign up for frequent flyer programs!
  • Try flying into or out of other nearby airports (bigger or smaller ones - either might save you money).
  • As a last resort, try Priceline or Expedia's Flight Price Matcher, or Hotwire. Start low, but be aware that if you don't get a match you'll have to wait seven days before trying again.
