- Read my advice for computer security
- Get a fast Internet connection like DSL or cable modem
- Read the error messages that you receive. They actually can give you clues to the problem. If not, Google them.
- Research your problems on the manufacturers website
- Keep a link to Microsoft Support handy
- Buy software at academic pricing at JourneyEd
- Don't use floppy disks. They break easily, and far less dependable than your computer hard disk. If you need to back up small files, buy a USB flash drive. You can get one that holds 128 MB (about 90 floppy disks worth) for $20 or less.
- Buy brand-name software
- Buy brand-name hardware
- Buy a computer from Dell or Gateway
- Use Microsoft software (they're number 1 because their software is number 1. really.)
- Experiment with your programs to find the new features
- Buy a quality printer (especially one with individual ink cartridges - Canon), and a laser printer if you need to do mostly black and white. There's still nothing better than laser.
- Don't buy cheap components unless you want... cheap components
- Get Windows XP or later -- its stability and performance is unmatched by all previous versions
- Open links without fear of your form or your Hotmail message being lost when the link opens in your current window. Start IE, click Tools, Options, Advanced tab. Uncheck 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts.'
- Download and run Windows Memory Diagnostic if you're getting weird errors in Windows
- Use Outlook? Download the Outlook Backup add-in
- Know whether to Open or Save and how to download smartly and securely
