Protecting our neighborhoods through better zoning

Our neighborhoods are at the heart of Anacortes’s appeal and quality of life. That’s why we need to reform our zoning code. Land use policy is critical to preserving our vibrant neighborhoods, facilitating economic development, and keeping our city’s budget balanced. As a land use attorney, I’m familiar with what needs to be done to keep our city great.

  1. We can facilitate economic development through unambiguous land use policies. Bringing clarity to our zoning code will create an attractive climate for new business, stimulate economic development, and provide certainty for both neighborhoods and developers.
  2. I propose removing conditional uses from our zoning code that are obviously incompatible. We need to provide performance standards for those that remain, so we have clear direction for developers and certainty for our neighborhoods.
  3. I support neighborhood-based zoning, developed with early and continuous participation of neighborhood residents. Ward 1 is made up of several neighborhoods, each of which has different needs. Individual neighborhoods should have individualized zones that protect their character and community.
