Advice for Car Owners

  • Don't idle for long periods of time; turn off the car if you'll be stopped for 30 seconds or more -- you'll save gas
  • If you run down your battery, charge it back up
  • Don't turn on the air conditioner when your engine is up to 3000 RPMs when you haven't used it in six months
  • In an automatic transmission, let up on the accelerator when the transmission shifts
  • In an automatic, put the car in neutral (not drive) at a stop light
  • In a manual, put the car in neutral (don't hold down the clutch) at a stop light
  • Change your oil every 3500 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first
  • Drive your car regularly
  • Don't drive your car for short trips
  • Keep your tires aired properly to keep gas mileage up
  • Don't drive with unnecessary weight in the car
  • Take snow tires off as soon as possible
  • Keep the gas tank filled
  • Keep the windshield clean - inside and out
  • Don't slam the car doors!
  • In an automatic, keep the weight of the car off the transmission. When parking on a hill, put the car in neutral, set the parking brake, release the foot brakes, then put the car in park.
  • Keep your car washed and waxed, especially after driving on salted roads
  • To quickly defrost the front windshield, use the defrost with the air conditioner on, the recirculation on, and the rear windows slightly down
  • Always use turn signals
  • Always turn into the lane nearest you
