Do Something About Climate Change

In honor of today's worldwide Live Earth concerts, here's a video entitled, "A Beginner's Guide to Giving a Damn about Climate Change." Besides explaining the problem with cute woodland creatures, it also provides tips on what you can do -- although, as this Financial Times piece argues, buying locally-grown food probably doesn't reduce your carbon output much.

Interesting article and cute video. And although I enjoyed both, I take issue with their focus (which is broadly representative of current narrow-mindedness in media hype). Carbon dioxide is merely one cause of global warming, which, in turn, is only one symptom of a much larger problem: living beyond our means at the expense of nature. So while the video makes good suggestions as to how to lessen your consumption, the focus on global warming and carbon seems to undermine the real benefits of, and reasons for, doing so. And the article, while bringing up some really good points to think about (efficiency of producing some things elsewhere and having them shipped to us rather than having us produce them inefficiently at home, etc.), it glosses over some of the more basic reasons for buying locally (not necessitating the massive infrastructure needed to ship perishables, etc.)
